Preparing your Car for the Driving Test

Besides practicing safe driving and developing your knowledge underlying safe driving practices, you need to ensure that your car is mechanically sound and roadworthy to avoid unexpected disqualifications. Here are some things you can check while preparing for your Driving Test.

Handbrake

Check that the handbrake on your car works correctly and will hold your car while stopped on a steep hill.

“L” plates

Attach “L” plates to the front and rear of your car so that they are clearly visible. Place them where they will not hamper your visibility while driving.

Registration Discs

Ensure that your tax, insurance and if applicable, NCT discs are clearly displayed on the windshield. It is also imperative that these are kept up-to-date; both for your Driving Test and to legally drive on the road.

Wiper blades

Weather can turn unexpectedly during your Driving Test. Ensure your wiper blades are working correctly to remove water from your windshield and, if applicable, rear windshield. If signs of wear and tear are apparent, replace your wiper blades as soon as possible to ensure that your visibility is not hampered when it rains .

Indicator and Brake Lights

Ensure that every one of your indicator and brake lights are working correctly. If you do not have anyone to assist you while checking brake lights, you can perform this check alone by either using a weight to depress the brake pedal while you walk around the back of the car yourself or park in front of a reflective surface – such as a home window – and identify each brake light in the reflection.

Sufficient Fuel

Running low on fuel can cause you unnecessary anxiety throughout your driving test. Further, should you run out of fuel during your test, it will be stopped immediately and will result in a fail.

Remove Potential Distractions

Ensure there are not objects hanging in the interior of the car including air fresheners, furry toys, dice etc. Further, remove phone holders, dash cameras or any other objects installed on the dashboard.

We will go through these items together during your final and pre-test lessons to ensure you won’t fail your test due to avoidable reasons.
