A well-maintained car is key to being safe on the road. In fact, you may be at risk of breaking the law if you don’t maintain your vehicle in a roadworthy condition.
Tyre Tread Depth
Do not allow your tyres to wear down below the minimum depth of 1.6mm. Make sure you replace them before they get this worn. The RSA recommend to replace tyres at the 2mm depth.
Tyre Pressure and Condition
Regularly check the pressure of each tyre including the spare. Also, be sure to examine your tyres for cuts, cracks and bulges to help avoid unexpected blowouts.
Check Engine Oil & Water Coolant
While on a level surface and your engine is turned off, regularly check engine oil and water coolant levels; ensuring both are above the required minimum and below the minimum levels.
Check Lights
Regularly check that all lights are in good working order and are easily visible to other road users
Engine Oil Choice
Use good quality synthetic engine oil rather than cheaper mineral oil as this can save you fuel. When getting your engine oil changed, ask your mechanic to ensure that your engine is tuned properly – poorly tuned engines user more fuel and emit more exhaust fumes.
Recycle Correctly
Make sure used oil, old batteries and used tyres are sent to a garage or a local authority recycling site. Avoid pouring oil down the drain, it is illegal and could lead to prosecution. Worse still, doing this will definitely harm the environment.
As part of your lessons, I will ensure that you are well-equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to check the road-worthiness of your car.
